Saudi Arabia launches a new program to protect people who speak up

Coming forward with information in a criminal or corruption case can be difficult, especially when there are concerns about safety. Saudi Arabia is aiming to address that with a new protection program designed for witnesses, victims, experts and people who report wrongdoing.

The initiative operates under the Law on the Protection of Whistleblowers, Witnesses, Experts and Victims and is overseen by the Public Prosecutor, with support from several government entities, including the Ministry of Interior and Nazaha.

The program will review protection requests, assess potential threats and coordinate measures to help keep individuals safe while they take part in investigations or court proceedings.

Depending on the level of risk involved, protection can include security escorts, relocation, alternative addresses, temporary identity documents and other safety measures. In certain cases, witness identities may also be kept confidential, and courts may hear testimony away from defendants if there are concerns about intimidation or threats.

Applications can be submitted by witnesses, victims, experts, people reporting crimes or corruption, or their legal representatives. Authorities will assess each case individually, taking into account factors such as the seriousness of the threat, the value of the information provided and whether family members may also be at risk.

The new program is intended to make it easier for people to come forward when they have important information, while providing greater protection throughout the legal process.
